In a move to recognize outstanding PhD research, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced the ‘PhD Excellence Citation’, an award aimed at promoting high-quality research in India. Each year, 10 top PhD theses will be selected from across the country, and the scholars behind them will be honored on Teachers’ Day (September 5th).

• • Applications will be open to research scholars from Central, State, Private, and Deemed Universities.

• • The award will be given across five streams: Engineering & Technology, Science, Social Sciences, Indian Languages, and Commerce & Management.

      The initiative aims to acknowledge exceptional research carried out in Indian universities, providing scholars with recognition at a global level.

      According to UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, the decision to award excellence in PhD research was taken during the October 3rd UGC meeting. He emphasized that this citation will help strengthen the research ecosystem and encourage more high-quality doctoral work in India.

1. 1. Categories for Recognition: The top 10 PhD theses will be selected from five specific streams:
      • • Sciences (including Agriculture and Medical Sciences)
      • • Engineering & Technology
      • • Social Sciences (including Education & Humanities)
      • • Indian Languages

          Each year, 2 scholars will be chosen from each stream.

1. 1. Selection Process:
      The selection will follow a two-tier process:
      • University-Level Screening Committees: Universities will create internal committees to shortlist candidates.
      • UGC Selection Committee: Based on university recommendations, UGC will make the final selection.

      An online application portal will be created where universities will submit their nominations.

      • यूजीसी की चयन समिति: विश्वविद्यालय की सिफारिशों के आधार पर अंतिम निर्णय यूजीसी द्वारा लिया जाएगा।

      इसके लिए एक ऑनलाइन पोर्टल भी बनाया जाएगा, जहां विश्वविद्यालय अपने चुने हुए आवेदनों को जमा करेंगे।
